My 2018 Resolution
Some people hate new year’s resolutions, but I actually don’t mind them.
Have I actually stuck to any of my new year’s goals? To be honest, I can’t recall.
Still, I find that there’s something worthy about wanting to improve yourself and making an effort to achieve that goal.
After all, they do say that if you post it on social media, you are forced to keep working towards your goal as your network will hold you accountable.
I recently came across a quote from Instagram (because I’m basic like that) and it really resonated with me:
“Do more things that make you forget to check your phone.”
I am definitely guilty of being on my phone too much. And even though I have a little one crawling around, I still can’t help but to take “mini-breaks” by checking the latest tweets, or status updates of people that I don’t even see or talk to in real life… just random acquaintances from my past who happen to always show up on my Facebook feed.
I’m also finding it difficult to not look at my phone during lunch time or before I go to sleep. I used to justify it by saying things like, “I’m educating myself! I really need to know what a good substitute for swordfish is! Useful information, all of it!”
In the end, what do I get out of it?
- Eye strain.
- Headaches.
- Information overload.
I’ve also started feeling like my shoulders are becoming uneven, and like any typical millennial, I googled it and self diagnosed that it’s due to my posture. But there is a happy ending to that Google black hole – I am now more aware of my posture and I’m always trying to improve it. I’ve stopped looking down at my phone, and am training myself to hold it at eye level. Same with my laptop – I’m always making sure that I’m not looking too down, but rather, level.
So I’ve decided that throughout 2018, I resolve to do more things that make me forget to check my phone. It means being in the moment when I’m spending time with my son. It means spending my weekends doing one of Hong Kong’s many beautiful hikes with my husband. It means picking up a book and finishing it, for once.
Sure, this resolution may seem vague, but when it comes to achieving goals, nothing happens overnight. And at least this will give me some sort of blog content for the next year. 🙂
Will you be doing any new year’s resolutions for 2018?
