On Building Resilience

Growing up, my dad told me that there will come a time in my life where I’ll be tested.
That time is now.
Some of you may have heard me complain about 2019. Without going into too many details, a few of my challenges include:
- Job loss
- Aging parents
- Managing my family’s emotional labor
And right when I settle into a manageable routine… the minor annoyances show up.
A vendor taking 2 months longer than needed to deliver something so simple. Battling illnesses such as pneumonia and toddler diarrhea.
To power through this rough patch, I’m doing the following:
- Going to therapy. Hearing unbiased opinions and advice from my therapist keeps me grounded and lets me know I’m not crazy. No need to consult the AITA Reddit, either.
- Reminding myself that it’s all relative. It could always be worse. When I think about the situation at the southern border of the US, or read about how many ethnic groups around the world are being wrongly persecuted, I realize how lucky I am that what I’m going through are my only problems.
- Drinking (in moderation). Seriously though, I treat myself to an affordable bottle of wine or a unique local beer once in a while because #selfcare.
How do you cope when it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year?
