Three Things: Thanksgiving 2019 Edition

Three Things: Thanksgiving 2019 Edition

Just in time for your tryptophan overdose, here’s what I’m giving thanks for.

My Support System

I am extremely lucky to have immediate and extended family who are willing to help me out when I need it the most.

I’m slowly realizing that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Parenting, adulting, and life are not meant to be done alone. To echo the great Ali Wong, “I have suffered enough.” I have access to help. I am taking it.

And don’t you worry – when I’m in a better position, I will pay it forward.

The Silver Lining

Getting fired was not one of my 2019 goals.

I experienced all the common emotions after being fired. I felt like the ultimate failure. My imposter syndrome was in high gear. I read a ton of articles with platitudes like, “It’s not your fault. You’re not an idiot. You’ll find something better.”

My last day on the job was a Friday. The following Monday, I applied to a digital marketing course, dipped into my savings and paid for the class in full, and started my upskilling journey.

This past month, a few freelancing opportunities came my way. I’m proud to say that 75% of these projects were unsolicited.

I am FLOORED that people want ME to help them grow their business. I’m on people’s radar!

It confirmed what I knew all along:

  • I am smart.
  • I am worthy.
  • I produce good work.

Take that, imposter syndrome.

Strong Female Leads

The following ladies, in no particular order, inspire me to love myself, exude confidence, and do better.

  • Ali Wong: This woman speaks my truth. Her book, Dear Girls, is a must-read for every grown ass man.
  • Taylor Swift: Tay Tay gets a lot of flack for what she does, but I totally get where she’s coming from. I support her.
  • Megan Thee Stallion: She coined the (now iconic) phrase “hot girl summer”. She’s a rapper who’s pursuing a degree in health administration. And to top it all off, she’s a fellow Houston girl. YES to all of this.
  • Lizzo: Not only does she have an amazing voice, but she can twerk while playing the flute. Thank you, Lizzo, for showing the world that marching band is lit AF!
  • Tiffany Haddish: I read her autobiography, and holy shit this woman had a hard life. It’s amazing how funny and happy she is today, despite what she’s been through. She’s an inspiration to anyone who’s experienced abuse and neglect.
  • Cardi B: While her behavior can make people raise their eyebrows, I love how she’s unapologetic about it. I need more of her confidence in my life.
  • Celeste Barber: This woman makes fun of all the staged bullshit on Instagram and I am HERE FOR IT.
