Three Things: High School Edition
My friend Lauren did a post on “three things“, where a category is given and you list three things associated with it.
I thought I’d take this to the next level by choosing one topic and elaborating on my “three things”. What can I say? Sometimes I be extra like that. 💅🏼
I have a tendency to live in the past sometimes, so this post’s theme is “Albums that make me think of high school”.
The following albums listed were CDs (!) I owned that I played over and over while driving around the ‘burbs in my new 2002 Honda Civic:
- John Mayer – Room For Squares
I remember learning about John Mayer around 2001-2002ish from a classmate who was wearing one of his band merch. (Remember, the Internet existed but it was slow and nothing like what it is today.) Curious, I downloaded a few of his songs off Napster, Limewire, or whatever was acceptable back in the early 2000’s.
Immediately, I thought his sound was so different from what was playing on the radio at the time. I loved how his lyrics were witty, with a play on words.
Eventually, a friend gave me the album on my 17th birthday. I kept it in my car CD rotation during my senior year in college. - Barenaked Ladies – Maroon
To be honest, I can’t remember why I bought this album. Perhaps it was the song “Falling For The First Time” that made me commit to purchasing it at my local Best Buy.
Back then, I would hang out in my room, write in my journal, and have this CD playing in the background.
One of my favorite, obscure songs from this album is “Conventioneers“. It’s about an office one-night stand that immediately becomes awkward the week after. Almost 20 years later, it makes me want to drink a glass of wine, light up the fireplace, listen, and chuckle. - Norah Jones – Come Away With Me
Norah Jones is another one of those artists that, when I first heard her on the radio, I thought, “Ooh, that’s different. Who’s that?”
I loved how most of her songs sat perfectly within my vocal range. This made it a fun album to sing along to (despite how chill and sometimes depressing her songs can be).
An underrated song on this album? “Shoot The Moon“. It makes me think of winter, being cozy in my living room, with a good book in hand.
And so concludes my trip down memory lane. I’m amazed at how easy it was to write this post! Perhaps “Three Things” should be a weekly thing on the blog…
